Things You Never Knew About Turkeys

I just had to sneak in a little post about turkeys, because there are turkeys, but then there are turkeys!

The turkey you'll eat for the holiday comes from the original American Wild Turkey, seen below:

And here is the actual domestic turkey you find on the farm and grown specifically for your table:

But there is another kind of turkey...the Ocellated turkey.

Ocellated Turkey

He lives in Central America, and he sure is gorgeous.  Maybe too gorgeous to eat...ha ha.  Check out this close-up of his feathers:

And the pink turkey at the top of this post?  Computer generated color...but I had to get your attention somehow, didn't I?

So have you ever wondered what people in Turkey call turkeys?

They call them hindis!

Happy Thanksgiving!   :)

Getting Cozy With A Seahorse

Just get close to a seahorse.

Real close.

And I bet you'll say to yourself..."unbelievable..."

The silvery iridescence on the Lined seahorse above is like a powdering of stardust.  Amazing!

As are the details on the seahorses in the following photos.  I think they will blow you away....

Can you believe these exist somewhere in the sea?

Keep scrolling!

The one above looks like a dragon up close, doesn't it?

And here are my very very favorite photos!

Did you know the seahorse is considered a carnivore? He eats shrimp, small fish, and plankton.

And one parting shot...

Maned seahorse

Don't forget to leave me a comment...were you amazed?  I really want to know!

Thursday

The Zebras and Tigers of the Sea

Seahorses!

They can be colorful chameleons, changing to adapt to their backgrounds.  But some have distinctive patterns of their very own.

Like Zebras...

and Tigertails.

Want to see?

Pretty amazing!  Zebra seahorses can be found living in Australian coral.

And then there's the Zebra-Snout seahorse:

And now for the Tigertail seahorse!

And if you think these photos are amazing, wait until you see my close-ups of seahorse faces...coming up next post!

Leave a comment and let me know what you think of the Zebra, Zebra-Snout, and Tigertail seahorses!

Tuesday

You Need a Magnifying Glass for These Seahorses

They're very hard to spot because they blend in with the coral.

And they're small.

As small as your fingernail.

So you swim by, never seeing the little gems that clutch the coral...

How many times did I miss them in my dives in Bonaire and Tahiti?  Could there have been dozens of Pygmy seahorses, all watching me?

Let's look at what I might have seen if I had looked closely:

They look more like little candies than real seahorses!

Now let's have a bit of I Spy fun!  How hard is it to spot the Pygmy seahorses in the photos below?

Woohoo, that last one is a doozy to see!  Did you spot him?

And here's the newest Pygmy seahorse discovered...so new, it's not even named yet.

I like the little star shapes all over him.  I would name him the Star seahorse...what would you name him?
